Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics

Outline of the course :

This is a 3 year B.Sc. Degree program which is divided into 6 semesters. This program prepares graduates for careers in Life Science in the fields of Microbiology, Biochemistry and Genetics. Apart from these subjects, a student gets an opportunity to learn compulsory subjects like Computer Fundamentals, Indian Constitution and Environmental Science which is an added advantage.

About the course :

  Microbiology :

Microbiology covers a diversity of discipline, which includes medical microbiology, molecular biology, microbial genetics, microbial physiology, immunology and study of single cells. In academics or research there is tremendous scope for microbiology. It is a base of biotechnology, cell biology, genetic engineering, molecular biology and bioinformatics. Graduation in microbiology opens all these fields.

The advent of new technologies and growing recognition of the enormous degree of microbial diversity has revolutionized our understanding of microbiology as a discipline. Microbiology is moving into a new era that focuses less on specific organisms and more on the processes and mechanisms that link them. Applying knowledge gained from new techniques in microbiology is leading to many improvements in the quality of human lives. In this way microbiology is making an important contribution to biotechnology, an era of science that applies industrial techniques to biological research.

Biochemistry :

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical basis of life, aiming to describe the structure and activities of living organisms in chemical terms. Biochemistry provides knowledge about how intimate molecules co-operate to give rise to the extraordinary phenomenon of life. It attempts to unravel the mechanisms behind the organized and controlled manner in which the cells carry out their metabolic reactions. Biochemistry is truly interdisciplinary science, drawing from and contributing to agriculture, biology, genetics, microbiology, fermentation technology, medicine, physiology, immunology, pharmacology, nutrition, biophysics, molecular biology, biotechnology and other fields.

  Genetics :

One of the most important subdivisions of the science of biology is genetics, the study of heredity. Genetics deals with the way in which characteristics are transmitted from one generation to the next, but also with the actions of the units of heredity as they bring about the characteristics which they control.

The application of our knowledge of genetics to the field of medicine has revealed the great importance of heredity in the case of many of the diseases of mankind. Genetics also has its value in preventive medicine. There are even legal applications of the principles of heredity. Court cases involving questions of disputed parentage may often be solved by an analysis of blood types or other inherited characters.

The science of genetics also includes a branch of study which is sometimes called “Eugenics”. This is the application of the principles of heredity to the improvement of mankind. Through rigid applications of our knowledge of inheritance have been able to produce domestic animals with superior qualities. Thus we see that the study of genetics promises to be not only very interesting but intensely practical & well worth while.
